FGM Awareness & Safeguarding Training

This course is suitable for:

  • All teaching and non-teaching staff in nurseries, pre-schools, primary and secondary schools.

  • Faith schools, church schools, independent and non-independent schools.

  • After school clubs and Sunday school staff.

  • Any organisation with a responsibility to understand and safeguard girls and young women.

Course Content:

This course supports staff working with girls and young women by highlighting the issue of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting  (FGM/C) and its impact within the UK. It aims to change perceptions, raise awareness, and emphasise that safeguarding against FGM is everyone’s responsibility.

⚠️ Please note: This course carries a Health and Safety First warning due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

 

Key topics include:

  • Definitions – understanding FGM.

  • Background & prevalence in the UK.

  • Common beliefs and cultural perspectives.

  • What the law says – including the Serious Crime Act.

  • Case studies & practical exercises.

  • Identifying those at risk.

  • Safeguarding responsibilities – your role in protection.

  • Recording and reporting correctly.

  • Referrals pathways – ensuring the right action is taken.

 

Duration

  • Half-day course: 9:00am – 1:00pm.

 

Certification & Renewal:

  • Certificate of Attendance awarded at the end of the course.

  • Recommended refresher every 2 years.
